Jacob Sukup dies in fatal Stanton County shooting
Fatal Stanton County shooting death of Jacob Sukup – Obituary
The Stanton County Sheriff’s Office has preliminarily concluded that the shooting death of Jacob Sukup, 22, from Norfolk, was self-inflicted and not due to a criminal act. Sheriff Mike Unger reported that this determination followed a forensic examination of the victim’s body and the evidence collected from the scene.
The incident occurred last Wednesday around 2:15 p.m., when deputies responded to a residence near 840th Road and 568th Avenue, about five miles northeast of Stanton. Family members found Sukup outside the home with a gunshot wound to his chest. Authorities declared him deceased at the scene.
A handgun, believed to have been involved in the shooting, was discovered inside the residence. An autopsy conducted on Friday in Douglas County revealed that Sukup likely could have survived for a brief period after the gunshot. Sheriff Unger noted that law enforcement initially treats all death investigations as homicides until sufficient evidence suggests otherwise.
