Fatal Hiawatha, Kansas car crash death of Richard Childress – Obituary

A 76-year-old man, identified as Richard Childress of Hiawatha, tragically lost his life Sunday night in a car crash on a highway in northeast Kansas. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on U.S. 36, west of Hiawatha. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Childress was driving an eastbound Kia SUV when the vehicle left the road, ran into a ditch, and hit a highway sign. Upon striking Goldfinch Road, the vehicle became airborne, rolling several times before throwing the driver from the car.

 

Childress, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
