Fatal Southport shooting death of J’Sean Williams – Obituary
J’Sean Williams, 21, tragically lost his life after being shot during his birthday party in Southport late last week. The celebration occurred at a friend’s home on Richard Street.
According to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened early Friday morning. Deputies were dispatched to 1154 Richard Street around 1 a.m. following reports of gunfire. Williams, a resident of 711 Johnson Street in Elmira, was identified as the victim.
During the party, Williams was struck by multiple gunshots. He was transported by Erway Ambulance to Arnot Ogden Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators have not yet identified any suspects. Authorities reported that those responsible fled the scene in a vehicle shortly after the shooting.
Between 30 and 50 people were at the party when the incident occurred, and law enforcement is working to identify and contact all attendees. Sheriff Bill Schrom stated that some individuals might be hesitant to come forward due to underage drinking and other concerns, but he stressed the importance of their cooperation.
“We understand some attendees may feel reluctant to speak with us, but our primary focus is on gathering information to assist in this investigation,” Schrom said. “If individuals come forward voluntarily, it will significantly aid our efforts.”
The sheriff’s office also emphasized that even those who left before the shooting could provide valuable information. Anyone with knowledge of the event is encouraged to contact the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division at 607-737-2933.
