Authorities reported that Juan Reyes Garcia was struck and killed in a crash along Interstate 75 near mile marker 72, also known as Alligator Alley. The incident occurred when the driver of a minivan, Darian Camacho, allegedly fell asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to veer off course and hit Garcia.
According to law enforcement, Camacho admitted to not having a valid U.S. driver’s license and claimed he had taken the van without proper authorization from a pastor in the middle of the night. He was traveling to Tampa, allegedly to escape threats in Miami. His account to officers varied, with some reports suggesting he took breaks at rest stops while others indicated he merely splashed water on his face to stay awake.
The crash also caused significant traffic delays. A passing motorist, identified as Miami firefighter Dennis Avila, stopped to assist. Avila attempted to check Garcia’s condition but found no pulse. He also provided emotional support to Garcia’s coworkers, who were deeply shaken by the tragedy.
Camacho appeared in court on Wednesday, where a judge denied him bond due to the severity of the charges, including causing a death while driving without ever having held a valid license.
Avila, reflecting on the incident, expressed sorrow but noted that responding to such scenes is an unfortunate part of his daily reality as a first responder.
