Fatal U.S. 31 crash death of Latoya Marie Smith – Obituary
A tragic accident on U.S. 31 near the Ludington Area Rest Area claimed the life of Latoya Marie Smith, a 35-year-old woman from Pentwater. The incident occurred on November 20, 2024, when Smith, along with another pedestrian, was struck while assisting at the scene of an earlier crash.
According to authorities, the initial crash involved a silver Pontiac G6 that lost control and ended up in the median. As emergency responders worked at the site, a 2021 GMC pickup truck, driven by a 37-year-old man from Shelby, also lost control and veered into the median. The pickup struck both pedestrians, including Smith, who was later pronounced dead at Corewell Hospital in Ludington.
The driver of the pickup, along with the other pedestrian and occupants of the Pontiac, were injured and transported to the hospital. Investigators noted that the road conditions were wet with slippery patches at the time of the crash. The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate, and witnesses are encouraged to come forward.
