Fatal Hwy. 17 crash near Rhinelander claims the life of Mark E. Carlson – Obituary
A tragic crash on November 18, 2024, on Highway 17 near Rhinelander resulted in the death of 60-year-old Mark E. Carlson from Woodbury, Minnesota. Carlson was driving south in a Honda CRV when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a GMC Sierra.
The crash occurred at about 1:15 p.m. on Highway 17 at Mud Lake Road in the town of Pine Lake. Carlson was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the GMC Sierra was airlifted to Wausau after being transported to Rhinelander Aspirus Hospital for treatment. There were no other vehicles or passengers involved in the incident.
The road was closed for several hours while crews cleared the scene and a crash reconstruction was conducted. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash. The Oneida County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by several local agencies during the response.
