Victor Chavez Sanchez Sr., 38, faces charges of murdering Delfina Perez Chilel, 41, who was four months pregnant at the time of her death. The incident took place in their Hallandale Beach home on November 12, when Chavez Sanchez reportedly killed Perez Chilel following an argument fueled by his belief that she had spiked his milk with pills. He later attempted suicide, but survived and was arrested days later.
Chavez Sanchez, who has a documented history of domestic violence and was diagnosed with schizophrenia, admitted to the crime after being questioned by detectives. Relatives noted that he had threatened to kill Perez Chilel multiple times and that she feared for her life, often sleeping in a separate room and hiding knives. Police found the victim with multiple defensive wounds and stab injuries. Despite the brutal attack, no direct injury was sustained to her uterus, but the homicide ended her pregnancy at 20 weeks.
Perez Chilel’s family has since launched a GoFundMe campaign to repatriate her body to Guatemala for burial, while also raising her children, who are now without their mother. The children, who were reportedly afraid of their father, confirmed during the investigation that Chavez Sanchez was strict and had previously threatened harm.
The tragic death has highlighted the dangerous intersection of domestic violence and pregnancy, with reports indicating that intimate partner violence is a leading factor in fatalities among pregnant women.
