Fatal Barnesville crash death of Decarlos Sheppard – Obituary
Decarlos Sheppard, a 40-year-old resident of Upson County, tragically lost his life early Thanksgiving morning in a car accident in Barnesville, Georgia.
According to the Georgia State Patrol and Lamar County Coroner Clay Tillery, the crash occurred at approximately 2:24 a.m. while Sheppard was driving south on Georgia Highway 36 near Country Kitchen Road. Investigators reported that Sheppard’s Jeep Grand Cherokee crossed the center line, left the roadway, and overturned before hitting multiple trees. The vehicle ultimately came to rest on its roof, concealed behind the tree line and not visible from the road.
Sheppard, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained a fatal head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene. Coroner Tillery noted that Sheppard’s passenger informed authorities he had been drifting off while driving. Despite efforts to keep him alert, it appears he fell asleep behind the wheel, leading to the crash.
The passenger suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Tillery emphasized the importance of preparing for long drives during holiday travel and avoiding driving while fatigued. Authorities do not currently believe Sheppard was under the influence, though the Georgia State Patrol is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
