Fatal Oak Park shooting death of Detective Allan Reddins – Obituary.
Charges have been filed against 37-year-old Jerell Thomas from Chicago in connection with the fatal shooting of Oak Park Detective Allan Reddins. Thomas is facing first-degree murder charges, as well as attempted murder of a peace officer, possession of a stolen firearm, and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
The tragic event took place on Friday morning when officers responded to a report of a man carrying a gun near a bank. Thomas, identified as the suspect, was involved in a confrontation with police and was shot during the incident. He is now in custody.
Detective Reddins, 40, had served with the Oak Park Police Department since May 2019. His death marks the first time an Oak Park officer has been killed in the line of duty since 1938.
Oak Park Police Chief Shatonya Johnson expressed her grief, saying it was the hardest day for any police chief. “Our police department, we’re hurting right now. I’m hurting. His family is hurting. Please keep us in your prayers,” she said.
Around 9 a.m., Reddins responded to a report of a man with a gun leaving a Chase Bank on Lake Street. After locating Thomas in the 800 block of Lake Street, officers ordered him to show his hands. The suspect then drew a handgun and shot Reddins in the side. Officers returned fire, injuring Thomas.
Reddins was rushed to Loyola University Medical Center in critical condition and was declared dead at 10:10 a.m. The suspect was also treated at the same hospital.
