Des Moines police have confirmed the identity of the 70-year-old man who was fatally shot by officers on November 26. Officers responded to a call at 6:07 a.m. about a man reportedly pointing a gun at a woman at 430 Grand Avenue. Upon arriving, officers observed the suspect, later identified as Charles Leonard, and another person in the building’s lobby.
The police stated that Leonard was holding a gun, and when he pointed it at the officers, they fired their weapons. Leonard was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the investigation, it was revealed that the weapon Leonard was holding was a pellet gun, which lacked the usual orange safety marker that typically identifies such items.
