Fatal Peoria police shooting death of Jax Benjamin Melwing – Obituary

Jax Benjamin Melwing, a man in his 20s, was fatally shot by police on Sunday morning, December 1, during an incident near Loop 101 and Grand Avenue in Peoria, Arizona. The encounter began when officers responded to reports of a man breaking into vehicles at a business lot in the area.

 

Upon arrival, officers observed Melwing allegedly attempting to steal from vehicles. When approached, he reportedly entered a car and tried to flee. Witnesses stated that Melwing was seen near a car dealership and auto shop before he attempted to escape. While doing so, he is said to have driven in a manner that pinned officers between vehicles.

 

In response, the officers discharged their weapons, striking Melwing. Despite immediate medical assistance from officers on the scene, he succumbed to his injuries. Two officers involved sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital, where they are expected to recover.

 

Peoria Police Officer Kristopher Babros described the incident as a tragic situation that officers strive to avoid. Traffic in the area was disrupted for much of the day as authorities conducted their investigation.

 

The Buckeye Police Department has taken over the case to ensure a thorough and impartial review of the events. This marks the 50th officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County this year and the 85th in the state.
