Fatal District Heights shooting death of Khamya Ferrell – Obituary
A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting that claimed the life of 14-year-old Khamya Ferrell in District Heights, Maryland, in May. The shooting, which took place during an ongoing gang conflict, also injured two others. Chance Waters, a 19-year-old from Suitland, faces charges of first- and second-degree murder in connection with Ferrell’s death, among other charges. He was taken into custody on Wednesday. Authorities are still searching for three other individuals involved in the incident.
The tragic shooting occurred on May 31 around 1:50 p.m. in the 6600 block of Atwood Street. Ferrell was struck by a stray bullet while she and a woman were inside an apartment. The woman suffered a graze wound to her head, while Ferrell was hit in the head and later died in the hospital on June 5 after never regaining consciousness. A third man was found outside with a leg wound, though he survived.
Surveillance footage from the apartment complex showed a stolen Kia Optima in the area, with three masked men exiting the car and firing at the location where Ferrell and the woman were later found. Police recovered three types of cartridge casings at the scene, including from a rifle. The vehicle was found a few hours later, abandoned nearby. It contained additional casings matching those found at the scene.
Investigators also found evidence linking Waters to the shooting. Police examined his social media accounts, revealing communications with other gang members involved in an ongoing feud with a rival group. Waters’ phone contained a video showing him in the same clothing as one of the shooters. Additionally, police allege that Waters attempted to sell a firearm shortly after the incident, boasting about its fully automatic firing capability.
