Fatal Vicksburg officer-involved shooting death of Amarion Thomas – Obituary
A tragic officer-involved shooting in Vicksburg has resulted in the death of 19-year-old Amarion Thomas. The incident occurred on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, on Bazinsky Road and is currently under investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI), in accordance with state protocol. The Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) continues to work on a related case involving a 17-year-old suspect, Artrial Bingham, who was arrested in connection with prior events.
The shooting stemmed from an investigation into attempted car burglaries that took place on Commerce Street in late November. Vicksburg Police responded to reports of suspicious individuals and, upon arrival, were fired upon by the suspects. This attack prompted a foot pursuit and led to the identification of the individuals involved. As the investigation unfolded, officers were able to secure warrants and locate the suspects. While attempting to serve a warrant at a home on Bazinsky Road, the situation escalated when one suspect displayed a firearm, prompting officers to act. Tragically, this led to the death of Amarion Thomas.
Vicksburg Chief of Police Penny Jones expressed condolences to the family of Thomas, acknowledging the pain caused by his loss while also extending support to the officer involved, who was not physically harmed. As the case continues to be investigated, Vicksburg officials are working to maintain transparency and ensure a thorough and impartial process.
