Michael David Burke, 58, was fatally shot during an encounter outside a police and fire station in Woodbridge early on December 5. The incident occurred around 5:06 a.m. in the rear parking lot of the Department of Fire & Rescue Station 26 and the Central District Police Station on Davis Ford Road.
Authorities reported that a uniformed officer, who had just completed their shift, was alerted to Burke’s presence on the property. When approached, Burke reportedly brandished a knife and advanced toward the officer while waving the weapon. Despite repeated orders to drop the knife, Burke failed to comply, prompting the officer to fire their service weapon, striking him in the upper body.
On-site emergency personnel rendered immediate medical assistance before transporting Burke to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Officials confirmed that no officers, fire department staff, or community members were harmed during the incident, which was confined to the station grounds.
The investigation has been turned over to the regional Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) at the request of Prince William County Police Chief Peter Newsham
