On Friday evening, a tragic crash in Newark claimed the lives of six people with ties to Jersey City, including Hudson Catholic High School football coaches Darryl McKnight, 33, and Lamar McKnight, 32, as well as assistant coach Brad Cunningham. The crash occurred around 10:47 p.m. when the vehicle they were in veered off the road, went airborne, and struck a support column of the Pulaski Skyway near the intersection of Raymond Boulevard and Blanchard Street.
Darryl and Lamar McKnight, both well-known figures in the Jersey City community, were mourned by many. Darryl was the head football coach at Hudson Catholic, and Lamar was his brother. The third coach, Brad Cunningham, was a former Rutgers football player and assistant coach. In the wake of the incident, tributes poured in from across the community, including heartfelt messages from Rutgers Head Coach Greg Schiano and other Jersey City officials.
While the identities of the other three victims remain undisclosed, Natasha McKnight, the mother of Darryl and Lamar, confirmed that two were family members. The incident has left the community and those close to the victims in deep mourning.
