Monique Scott, a 28-year-old resident of the Magestic Gardens apartment complex in Lauderhill, Florida, was fatally shot by a police officer on Friday during a confrontation.
According to Lauderhill Police Lt. Antonio Gonzalez, officers were dispatched to the complex after receiving a call with limited information at approximately 12:25 p.m. When an officer arrived and knocked on the identified apartment door, there was no response. While leaving, the officer encountered Scott near his police vehicle.
The officer reported that Scott was armed with a large knife and allegedly charged toward him, leading to the discharge of his firearm. Scott was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries. The officer, who was not physically injured, was taken to the hospital as part of standard procedure.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent investigation into the incident, while the officer has been placed on administrative leave. Police are urging any witnesses or those with information about the case to come forward.
Lt. Gonzalez emphasized the department’s commitment to transparency and accountability, acknowledging the community’s concerns regarding the event. Cellphone footage from the scene showed paramedics performing CPR on Scott.
