Two lives were tragically lost on Sunday afternoon in Washington County, Iowa, during a wrong-way crash that occurred after a police pursuit.
The incident began in Muscatine when authorities received reports at around 3:15 p.m. of a woman firing a gun from her vehicle. Officers identified the driver as 36-year-old Brittany Miles, who refused to stop when approached by police, leading to a high-speed chase.
During the pursuit, a Muscatine officer lost control of his vehicle near the Cedar River and crashed. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
As the chase moved onto Highway 218 and entered Washington County, additional law enforcement agencies joined in. The pursuit reached a tragic conclusion when Miles drove into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with another vehicle.
Miles was declared dead at the scene. Olivia Alvarez, the 27-year-old driver of the other car, succumbed to her injuries despite attempts to save her life.
Muscatine police have confirmed there were no reported injuries during the initial shooting incident and are continuing their investigation into its circumstances. The crash is currently under review by the Iowa State Patrol.
