Terrell Police Department Officer Jacob Candanoza, 28, tragically lost his life during a traffic stop late Sunday night in Terrell, Texas. The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. near the Super 8 Motel on S. State Highway 34.

 

Officer Candanoza had stopped a vehicle for an expired Mississippi license plate. Shortly after, emergency calls reported that an officer had been shot. Responders found Officer Candanoza critically injured, and he was transported to Baylor Scott and White Medical Center in Forney, where he succumbed to his injuries.

 

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Darrian Cortez Johnson, fled the scene and was apprehended early Monday after crashing his vehicle during a police pursuit in Van Zandt County. Johnson is now in custody, facing a charge of capital murder of a peace officer, with no bond set as of the latest reports.

 

Officer Candanoza joined the Terrell Police Department in July 2024 and served with dedication. He was a husband and father, remembered for his courage and commitment to the community.

 

Condolences have poured in from across the country, with statements of support from nearby communities and officials, including Forney’s Mayor Jason Roberson and Police Chief Carrie White. They praised Officer Candanoza’s bravery and expressed solidarity with his family and colleagues during this difficult time.
