D’Angelo Darrell Alcorn, an 8-year-old boy from Akron, tragically lost his life Monday after accidentally shooting himself at his home in Firestone Park.

 

The incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. in the 1500 block of Evergreen Avenue. According to Akron police, D’Angelo accessed an unsecured handgun and accidentally discharged it, striking himself in the torso on the second floor of the residence. His mother, who was home at the time, called 911 to report the incident.

 

Emergency responders transported D’Angelo to Akron Children’s Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The firearm was recovered at the scene, and authorities have stated the investigation is ongoing.

 

D’Angelo was a student at Crouse Community Learning Center, according to Akron Public Schools board member Carla Jackson.

 

The tragedy highlights the importance of gun safety, with experts recommending that firearms be stored unloaded and locked, out of children’s reach.
