Fatal Sunrise Highway crash death of Darrel Sumpter – Obituary
Darrel Sumpter, 51, tragically lost his life in a two-vehicle collision Friday afternoon on Sunrise Highway in Shirley, New York. The crash, which occurred around 1:15 p.m. between exits 57 and 58, also left two others injured, including Sumpter’s passenger and the other driver.
Authorities report that both vehicles overturned during the collision, resulting in the westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway being shut down between William Floyd Parkway and Horseblock Road for several hours.
Sumpter was a respected member of the community and served as the assistant boys’ varsity basketball coach for the William Floyd School District. His contributions to the team and the lives of the students he mentored will be deeply missed.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation.
