Fatal New Orleans crash death of Giselle Smith and Semaj Morris – Obituary
Giselle Smith, 17, and Semaj Morris, 17, both students at West Jefferson High School, tragically died in a crash Wednesday night.
The accident occurred when the teens were traveling in a Toyota Camry, which was struck by a car driven by Joneaka Smooth, 30, who had been fleeing from deputies responding to a shoplifting incident.
Smooth, along with two accomplices, was driving erratically on I-10 before exiting at St. Bernard Avenue, crossing multiple lanes, jumping a median, and colliding with the Camry. Both Smith and Morris were pronounced dead at the scene.
Smith’s 21-year-old sister, Paris Kiper, was critically injured and remains in the hospital. Investigators say Smooth has been charged with manslaughter, hit-and-run, and fleeing police, while one accomplice remains at large.
