Fatal Tempe shooting death of Matthew Granado – Obituary
Matthew Granado, 32, was fatally shot by authorities on Friday evening after allegedly shooting a police officer in the leg. Granado, who had an active felony charge related to drug sales, was spotted by a Tempe police special unit at a Circle K gas station near the intersection of Rural and Baseline Roads. The police team, part of the ACTION unit tasked with addressing high-priority issues in the city, engaged Granado.
Granado attempted to flee the scene, driving down Rural Road and crossing over to Lamplighter Lane. After abandoning his vehicle, he ran on foot and brandished a firearm, firing at the officers and injuring one of them in the leg. In response, officers returned fire, fatally wounding Granado. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The injured officer, whose name has not been disclosed, was transported to the hospital, where they underwent surgery and are expected to recover. The Mesa Police Department is investigating the incident as part of the East Valley Critical Response Team’s protocol for handling officer-involved shootings.
