Fatal Hillsboro, Fountain County crash death of Stephen Hutchens – Obituary

A Crawfordsville man, identified as 43-year-old Stephen Hutchens, lost his life in a tragic two-vehicle accident on Interstate 74 on Thursday afternoon. The Fountain County Coroner’s Office confirmed Hutchens was declared dead at the scene.

Indiana State Police Trooper Brown reported that Hutchens was driving a 2004 Ford F-150 westbound on the interstate near mile marker 23 when the vehicle unexpectedly lost control.

The truck crossed the median, rolled over, and entered the eastbound lanes, where it collided with an oncoming semi-truck and trailer.

The semi-truck came to a stop in a ditch on the south side of the highway, while the Ford F-150 came to rest in the left lane of the eastbound side. Moments later, the Ford F-150 caught fire.

The semi-truck driver, 51-year-old Thomas Connolly of Buckeye, Arizona, was trapped inside his vehicle and required rescue by fire personnel. Connolly sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing by the Indiana State Police, with assistance from the Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction Team, local authorities, and emergency responders.
