Fatal Greenwich plane crash death of Yakov Friedman – Obituary

Yakov Friedman, 32, of Monsey, New York, was identified as the victim of a small plane crash that occurred on Interstate 684 near Greenwich, Connecticut, on Thursday evening. Friedman, an employee of Fireside Kosher restaurant, was a passenger in a single-engine Tecnam P-2008 aircraft piloted by Kalmen Goldberger, 26, of Linden, New Jersey.

According to the FAA, the plane departed from Linden, New Jersey, and was en route to Westchester County Airport when the pilot reported engine trouble. Attempts to land at the airport were unsuccessful, leading to a crash on I-684 at approximately 6:35 p.m.

Goldberger sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby Westchester hospital for observation. The crash also caused a fuel spill, which is being managed by authorities.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the incident. Preliminary findings indicate the engine failed mid-flight. A detailed initial report is expected within 30 days, while the full investigation, including probable cause, may take 12 to 24 months.

The NTSB is examining several factors, including flight records, aircraft maintenance, weather conditions, and the pilot’s recent activities. Witnesses or those with relevant information are encouraged to contact the NTSB at witness@ntsb.gov.
