Keion LaShawn DeGrate, a 21-year-old resident of Akron, was identified by the Summit County Medical Examiner as the victim of a deadly shooting that took place in Patterson Park on Sunday afternoon.
Akron police responded to reports of multiple gunshots in the 600 block of Lucille Avenue around 3 p.m. on December 8. According to Akron Police Captain Michael Miller, several 911 calls described hearing more than a dozen shots, with some callers noting they sounded like rifle rounds.
Officers discovered DeGrate in a grassy area near the park’s basketball courts. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds inflicted by an assault rifle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities recovered over 12 shell casings from the field. Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle, possibly an SUV, leaving the area after the shooting. Captain Miller confirmed that detectives are investigating and have located a vehicle they believe may be connected to the incident. Efforts are ongoing to establish the driver’s identity and their involvement in the crime.
The investigation remains active as police work to identify the shooter.
