Fatal Cumberland County high-speed rollover death of Muhammad Shezal Ali – Obituary
A high-speed rollover accident on Interstate 81 Southbound in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, claimed the life of 19-year-old Muhammad Shezal Ali on the night of December 14.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, the crash happened at approximately 9:43 p.m. near mile marker 62.6 in East Pennsboro Township. Two vehicles, reportedly driving at excessive speeds and overtaking other motorists, were involved in the incident.
The crash occurred when a Honda Civic, driven by Ali, attempted to switch from the left lane across multiple lanes toward the right. The Civic struck the rear passenger side of a Hyundai Sonata, causing both cars to spin out of control and roll over.
Ali’s car rotated 90 degrees, rolled several times, hit a tree, and disintegrated into multiple pieces before coming to rest in the median, where it caught fire. Ali was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. Despite efforts by passing motorists to rescue him from the burning wreck, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Hyundai Sonata also flipped multiple times and came to rest upside down along the left shoulder of the highway. Its driver, a 21-year-old man, declined medical transportation after being evaluated by emergency responders.
The southbound lanes of I-81 were closed at Exit 65, with traffic detoured until the highway reopened at 3:35 a.m. Authorities identified “racing on highways” as the primary cause of the crash.
Responding agencies included East Pennsboro EMS, Hampden Township EMS, Northeast Fire Department, East Pennsboro Fire Police, and the Pennsylvania State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit.
This tragic accident underscores the dangers of reckless driving and excessive speed on Ppublic roadways.
