On Thursday, December 12th, Patsy Mackin, 59, tragically lost his life in a workplace accident at a construction site on Dublin Road, Kilkenny. Authorities, including the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and gardaí, are conducting investigations into the incident, which occurred around 4 p.m.
Emergency services and gardaí arrived at the scene, but Mr. Mackin was pronounced dead shortly after. It is suspected that he was struck by a vehicle while working at the site.
Mr. Mackin, originally from Roath, Cardiff in Wales, lived in Callan, Kilkenny, with his family. He is survived by his wife Ann and their two children, Rhiannon and James. Known for his warm personality and kindness, friends described him as a loyal and generous person who left a lasting impression with his ever-present smile.
The funeral service for Mr. Mackin will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St Mary’s Cathedral, Kilkenny.
This tragedy highlights ongoing safety concerns in the workplace. Recent statistics revealed 43 work-related fatalities in Ireland in 2023, with 11 of those occurring in the construction sector. So far this year, 30 workplace deaths have been recorded, including four in construction.
