Benjamin Grube, 24, was fatally shot by El Cajon police officers after allegedly attempting to run them over with his vehicle. The incident occurred on December 12, 2024, outside the El Cajon Police Department.
Authorities stated that Grube struck Patrol Sergeant Kevin Maxwell with his truck as he and Lieutenant Evan Drescher were preparing for a retirement ceremony. After hitting the sergeant, Grube’s truck crashed into a tree, but he reversed and attempted to drive toward the officers again, prompting them to open fire.
Maxwell, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, was treated in the hospital and released the following day. Grube was transported to a trauma center, where he was pronounced dead.
The motive for his actions remains unclear, and an investigation by the San Diego Police Department is ongoing. Grube’s family is cooperating with authorities as they continue to piece together the events surrounding the fatal encounter.
