Fatal Colorado Springs officer-involved shooting death of Dean Ackerman – Obituary

A 33-year-old man, Dean Ackerman, was fatally shot by police in Colorado Springs on December 13. The incident occurred after authorities were called to the 3800 block of Astrozon Boulevard at 11 p.m. in response to reports of shots being fired.

Upon their arrival, officers discovered Ackerman inside a vehicle in a parking lot, where he was reportedly brandishing a handgun. Police attempted to deescalate the situation through negotiation for nearly an hour. During the exchange, Ackerman allegedly fired multiple rounds and ignored commands to drop the weapon.

Efforts to use less-lethal weapons were unsuccessful, and the situation escalated when Ackerman allegedly pointed his gun at officers. In response, law enforcement officers discharged their weapons, fatally wounding Ackerman.

No other individuals, including community members or officers, were injured during the incident. Following the shooting, eight officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department were placed on administrative leave in accordance with department protocol.

Although an El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputy was present, he did not take part in the shooting. The Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the incident, as required by Colorado law.
