Ja’Morius Mitchell dies in fatal Addis shooting
Fatal Addis shooting death of Ja’Morius Mitchell – Obituary
Authorities have confirmed that a body found in a burning sugarcane field in Addis belongs to Ja’Morius Mitchell, an 18-year-old who had been missing for six days. Dental records from the West Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office matched the remains to Mitchell, who was reported missing on December 12.
Plaquemine Police Chief Stephen Engolio expressed concern from the beginning, noting Mitchell had been in regular contact with his mother until he suddenly stopped communicating, leading to suspicions of foul play. The body was discovered on Wednesday afternoon near Sid Richardson Road, where the sugarcane fire had been reported. Officials indicated that Mitchell suffered a gunshot wound.
Troy Canella, the local farmer who first spotted the fire, reported seeing the flames shortly before 3 p.m. West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene an hour later. Mitchell’s death is now being investigated as a homicide.
