Fatal Mahomet shooting death of Janis L. Mason, Caleb M. Mason, and Sara E. Mason – Obituary

The Champaign County Coroner’s Office has confirmed the deaths of three family members following a shooting in Mahomet on the night of December 18, 2024. Police responded to the scene at 9:41 p.m. in the 1100 block of Riverside Drive after receiving reports of the incident. Officers found Janis L. Mason, 61, Caleb M. Mason, 23, and Sara E. Mason, 26, with gunshot wounds.

 

Janis and Caleb were transported to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where they were both pronounced dead shortly after 10 p.m. Sara was declared deceased at the scene. Authorities are investigating the case alongside Mahomet Police and Illinois State Police.

 

John R. Lyons, 24, the suspect in the shooting, was fatally shot by police later that night in a separate incident in the Chicago suburbs. A public prayer vigil is scheduled to be held at Grace Church of Mahomet on Thursday evening.
