Axel Maldonado Guerrero dies in fatal Lake Villa car crash
Fatal Lake Villa car crash death of Axel Maldonado Guerrero – Obituary
The Lake County Coroner’s Office has confirmed the identity of the 22-year-old man killed in a crash near Lake Villa on Christmas Eve. Axel Maldonado Guerrero, a resident of Round Lake Beach, died after the Jeep he was riding in crashed into a home.
At around 7:30 p.m. on December 24, a Jeep driven by 31-year-old Marcos Corona-Vargas veered across lanes of traffic on West Engle Drive, first crossing into the westbound lane, then back onto the eastbound lanes before leaving the road entirely. The vehicle continued into a yard and struck an unoccupied home, according to authorities.
Guerrero, who was seated in the front of the Jeep, was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma. A backseat passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital, while the driver, Corona-Vargas, was also seriously hurt and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Authorities determined that Corona-Vargas was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He has been charged with reckless homicide and DUI and will be taken to the Lake County Jail once released from the hospital. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
