Sebastian Zapeta faces murder charges in death of woman set on fire in New York City subway
Fatal New York City subway fire death of unidentified woman – Obituary
Sebastian Zapeta, 33, has been arrested and charged with murder and arson in connection with the tragic death of a woman who was set on fire inside a subway train at Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn on Sunday morning.
Surveillance footage shows Zapeta approaching the woman, who may have been asleep, and setting her clothes alight. Within seconds, her clothing was fully engulfed in flames, and Zapeta, instead of helping, watched as she burned.
Emergency responders extinguished the flames, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Police later captured Zapeta after tips from high school students identified him, and he was found riding the same subway line.
Authorities condemned the act as depraved and are committed to bringing justice for the victim.
