Fatal Richland County police pursuit crash death of Antavius Brown – Obituary
The driver involved in a deadly police chase in Richland County has been identified as 36-year-old Antavius Brown of Columbia. The crash, which occurred after a high-speed pursuit on Garners Ferry Road, also claimed the life of 52-year-old Ryan Haman, also from Columbia. Haman’s dog was killed in the incident as well.
The pursuit began early on Saturday morning when Columbia Police responded to a call reporting a woman who had been shot during a domestic dispute at the Cross Hill Apartments. Brown had driven the victim to the hospital for treatment, but later made threats about harming himself and others at the apartment. Police began searching for Brown’s vehicle after receiving a description.
Officers located Brown’s car behind a business on Leesburg Road, but when they attempted to stop him, Brown fled the scene, leading to a high-speed chase. The pursuit ended moments later with a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Garners Ferry Road and Hazelwood Roads. Haman and his dog died in the crash.
Police believe that Brown may have shot himself during the chase. He was hospitalized, but later succumbed to his injuries. Investigators noted that Brown had been live-streaming the chase as it unfolded. The crash and the deaths remain under investigation.
