Fatal Burlington Christmas Day shooting death of Anthony Campbell – Obituary.

Anthony Campbell, 44, was fatally shot on Christmas Day in Burlington, Iowa. The incident occurred at a residence in the 1800 block of Madison Avenue, where Campbell was found by his girlfriend with a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities responded to the call at approximately 7:35 p.m., but Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have charged Eric Rios, 46, with first-degree murder in connection to the shooting. Investigators allege that Rios, Campbell’s girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, arrived at the home, knocked on the back door, and shot Campbell when he opened it. Witnesses present during the incident fled the house upon hearing the gunshot.

During their investigation, detectives recovered a .40-caliber shell casing near Campbell and later found matching ammunition at Rios’ residence. Security footage and witness accounts also placed Rios in the vicinity of the crime scene shortly before the shooting.

Rios was arrested and is being held at the Des Moines County Jail on a $1.5 million cash-only bond. His preliminary court hearing is scheduled for January 2. The Burlington Police Department, assisted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Crime Lab, continues to investigate the case.
