Fatal Hale County car crash death of Robert Curtis Dennis and Mary Hatley Dennis – Obituary

A tragic collision in Hale County claimed the lives of an Olton couple, Robert Curtis Dennis, 96, and Mary Hatley Dennis, 89, on Saturday evening.

The crash occurred around 4:58 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. Highway 70 and FM 179, east of Olton, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Robert Dennis was driving a 2022 Chevrolet pickup north on FM 179 and turned left onto U.S. 70. Officials say he failed to yield to an eastbound 1997 Peterbilt truck tractor hauling a semi-trailer.

The tractor-trailer struck the driver’s side of the pickup, killing both Robert and Mary Dennis at the scene. The 26-year-old driver of the tractor-trailer, a resident of Elmore City, Oklahoma, was unharmed. Authorities noted that Mary Dennis and the truck driver were wearing seatbelts, while Robert Dennis was not.

The conditions at the time of the accident were dry and clear, and further investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

The Dennises were cherished members of the Olton community. In 1980, they established an insurance and tax business that became a staple in the area.

After their retirement, the business transitioned to Wagner Insurance & Tax, with the new owners continuing the couple’s legacy of dedicated service to Olton.
