Thomas Villa-Estrada, 19, tragically lost his life in a car crash in Grand Island, Nebraska, on Christmas Day. The crash occurred at approximately 3 a.m. when Villa-Estrada, driving a silver Dodge Charger, collided with another vehicle and struck a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities believe speed may have contributed to the crash. While no other vehicles were initially present at the scene, investigators determined that a second vehicle was involved and had fled.
Police traced the other vehicle to 67-year-old Pedro Chavez-Rodriguez, who admitted to being involved but claimed he left because he thought Villa-Estrada was leaving as well. Chavez-Rodriguez was later arrested for leaving the scene of a fatal collision and operating a vehicle without a valid U.S. license.
The investigation remains ongoing as police work to gather more details about the crash.
