Gerardo Rosales Murillo, 15, of San Jose, California, died early Sunday morning, December 29, when the car he was riding in crashed into a freeway support pillar in Walnut Creek. The accident occurred at 2:36 a.m. on Newell Avenue beneath the Interstate Highway 680 overpass.

Murillo was seated in the front passenger seat when the vehicle collided with the pillar. A Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputy arrived at the scene, performing CPR on Murillo before he was rushed to John Muir Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The vehicle contained five juveniles, three of whom fled the scene.
