Aleksandar Martinovic dies in fatal Cetinje, Montenegro shooting
Fatal Cetinje, Montenegro shooting death of Aleksandar Martinovic – Obituary.
Aleksandar Martinovic, 45, identified as the gunman behind a deadly rampage in Cetinje, Montenegro, succumbed to self-inflicted injuries after attempting suicide. The incident unfolded near his home on Thursday when police cornered him. Interior Minister Danilo Saranovic stated that Martinovic tried to take his own life upon realizing there was no escape. Although he survived initially, he died en route to the hospital.
The tragedy began on Wednesday afternoon when Martinovic opened fire at a restaurant in Cetinje, killing four individuals. He then moved to three additional locations, where six more people, including two children, lost their lives. Four others sustained critical injuries.
Authorities revealed that Martinovic had a history of illegal weapons possession. Police director Lazar Scepanovic indicated that heavy alcohol consumption may have played a role, and a dispute reportedly preceded the attack. Officials confirmed the shooting was not linked to organized crime.
The massacre deeply shocked the nation, which has a population of just over 600,000. Prime Minister Milojko Spajic called the event a “terrible tragedy” and declared three days of national mourning. President Jakov Milatovic expressed his horror at the attack.
Mass shootings are uncommon in Montenegro, despite its significant gun culture. The Western Balkans, however, remain saturated with firearms from past conflicts. Spajic stated that the government would consider stricter gun regulations, including a potential ban on private weapon ownership.
