Kansas City police are investigating the city’s first homicide of 2025 after a New Year’s Day shooting left 40-year-old Calvin L. Bushnell dead and another man injured.
Officers responded to a shooting report at approximately 2:45 a.m. in the 3100 block of Elmwood Avenue. Upon arrival, they were directed to a residence where Bushnell was found with gunshot wounds. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. A second victim was transported to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
Authorities stated that several individuals had gathered at the residence before the shooting occurred. The incident is being treated as a homicide, and police are urging anyone with information to contact homicide detectives or the TIPS Hotline anonymously, with a reward of up to $25,000 available.
Kansas City recorded 147 homicides in 2024, a decline from the record-breaking 185 in 2023.
