Fatal Gahanna shooting death of Alex Russell – Obituary
On December 19, 2024, 23-year-old Alex Russell was shot and killed by Gahanna police officers after allegedly pointing a gun at them.
Officers were called to Springhill Suites regarding a fraudulent credit card use and were directed to Russell’s room. When they attempted to make contact with him, Russell fled through a back window and into a nearby parking lot.
Despite multiple commands from police to stop, Russell ignored them and pointed a firearm at officers, prompting them to open fire.
Russell was transported to Mount Carmel St. Ann’s hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Prior to the fatal shooting, a nonlethal round had been deployed.
No officers were injured, and four officers involved were placed on administrative leave as the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation conducts its investigation.
Gahanna Police Chief Jeff Spence described the incident as traumatic, noting that it was the city’s first fatal officer-involved shooting in over a decade.
