On December 14, 2024, 33-year-old Dean Ackerman tragically died following an officer-involved shooting in the parking lot of a business on Astrozon Boulevard.
Ackerman, who had been reported as suicidal and was holding a gun to his head, had been sitting in his truck for nearly an hour before the incident.
Despite officers’ efforts to de-escalate the situation and plea for him to drop the weapon, Ackerman fired shots inside the truck, leading to a tense standoff.
After he exited the vehicle and aimed the gun at officers, they returned fire, striking him. Ackerman was pronounced dead at the scene, and a .40 caliber handgun was recovered.
The incident remains under investigation by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
