Lance Appleby dies in fatal Eyre Peninsula shark attack

Fatal Eyre Peninsula shark attack death of Lance Appleby – Obituary

Lance Appleby, a 28-year-old surfer, lost his life in a shark attack while surfing near Granites Beach, south of Streaky Bay on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. Known for his skill in surfing and football, he was described by loved ones as a talented athlete and a kind-hearted individual.

The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. when witnesses saw a shark approach him while he was riding the waves. Despite efforts by a friend who searched the waters on a jet ski, only his surfboard was recovered about 1500 meters offshore. The board had a severed leg rope and visible bite marks, confirming a shark attack.

Local surfer Jeff Schmucker noted that earlier warnings had been issued about a possible great white shark presence in the area, though the exact species involved in the attack remains unknown. Search efforts for Appleby’s body are ongoing. His passing has left the local community in mourning, remembering him for his athleticism and bright spirit.
