Six-year-old Jayden Gotell-Watkins tragically lost his life in a fire that swept through a condominium complex in Ewing Township, New Jersey, on Thursday afternoon.
The fire began around 3 p.m. at the Cambridge Hall condo building on Lower Ferry Road, severely damaging several units.
Firefighters were informed that Jayden was trapped on the fourth floor. Despite their efforts, he was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at Capital Health Regional Medical Center. Originally from Baldwinsville, New York, Jayden had been visiting relatives when the fire occurred.
According to witnesses, there was widespread panic as neighbors, including elderly residents, attempted to evacuate. Jayden’s great-grandmother reportedly suffered burns on her hands and arms while trying to save him. Neighbors assisted in helping those with limited mobility, including a 103-year-old woman.
In total, eleven police officers, one firefighter, and three residents were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from smoke inhalation to minor burns. All injured officers have since been released. The Red Cross is providing support to 16 displaced residents from 12 condos.
