A tragic incident occurred on Friday night, January 5, 2025, when 42-year-old Jennifer Proeschel was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on Route 6 in Lake Mohegan.
According to Yorktown Police, Proeschel was attempting to cross Route 6 at Mohegan Avenue around 8 p.m. when she was hit by a speeding vehicle driven by 24-year-old Jake Barak of Cortlandt Manor, who then fled the scene.
Emergency responders from the Mohegan Lake Fire Department and paramedics from Putnam and Westchester provided immediate aid before transporting Proeschel to Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Peekskill, where she was later pronounced dead.
Through investigation, authorities identified Barak’s vehicle and located him at his home near the Putnam County line.
Barak was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, speeding, and driving in the wrong lane.
