Fatal Zvishavane drowning death of Tendai Hove and Leeroy Makungwe – Obituary

On Saturday, two young children, 9-year-old Tendai Hove and her 11-year-old cousin Leeroy Makungwe, tragically drowned while swimming in an abandoned chrome mine near Ngwaro Village, Zvishavane.

The incident took place around 11 a.m., when the children were sent on an errand but were drawn to the open-pit mine left behind after mining activities. The bodies of the victims were discovered around 3 p.m. that same day.

Although other children who were with them managed to swim in the shallower areas and escape unharmed, the mine’s dangerous conditions, which have long been a community concern, remain a pressing issue.

Despite calls from locals to fill in the pits, nothing has been done to address the danger.
