Jeffrey Fiala, a 25-year-old firefighter, tragically lost his life while battling a fire at a two-story apartment building on Young Street in McCully on January 6, 2025.
The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) responded to reports of smoke around 7:43 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters searched the second floor, but moments later, two firefighters issued a “mayday” call.
While one was able to escape, Fiala was found critically injured on the first floor and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
In addition to the fatality, five other firefighters were taken to Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition, and another firefighter was transported to Straub Medical Center in critical condition. One civilian was also hospitalized in serious condition.
Jeffrey Fiala had been with the Honolulu Fire Department for over a year. The exact cause of his death is still under investigation, and more details are expected from the medical examiner. The HFD held a press conference at Straub to address the tragic incident.
Fiala’s family confirmed his identity on Tuesday morning and requested privacy as they cope with the loss.
