Matthew Ahern, 40, of Grayslake, was fatally struck by a Metra train on the Union Pacific North line Thursday morning.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity, with Deputy Coroner Stephen Newton stating that preliminary autopsy findings indicate Ahern died from blunt force trauma.
The tragic incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. near milepost 34.75, between the Waukegan and North Chicago Metra stations, close to Oakwood Cemetery.
Following the collision, inbound and outbound train traffic was temporarily suspended in the area, with full service resuming within three hours.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
