Nathaniel Boyd, 24, of Wichita, and Whitney Almond, 26, of Clearwater, tragically died on Sunday following a weather-related accident on I-235.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, their vehicle went off the road, down an embankment, and rolled several times due to hazardous icy conditions caused by an Arctic blast affecting much of the U.S.
Elsewhere, extreme winter weather has claimed additional lives, including Everett Carter, a 61-year-old public works employee in Missouri, who was struck by a dump truck while performing snow removal duties.
In Texas, an unidentified individual was found deceased near a bus shelter on Monday morning, likely due to freezing temperatures.
The Arctic blast has led to severe travel disruptions, with more than 5,000 flight delays and nearly 2,000 cancellations reported across the U.S. by Monday afternoon. Six states have declared a state of emergency, and the National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings and advisories for 23 states.
Louisville, Kentucky experienced record-breaking snowfall, with nine inches reported in a single day, marking the heaviest snowfall in over 25 years.
Mayor Craig Greenberg described the conditions as significant, while the NWS warned that travel could be extremely dangerous due to reduced visibility and treacherous roadways.
The polar vortex is expected to continue bringing harsh winter conditions, with more frigid winds and heavy snow in the coming weeks.
