Fatal Hobbs officer-involved shooting death of Jesus Rubio – Obituary

Jesus Rubio, 28, of Las Cruces, was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Hobbs, New Mexico, on Monday evening.

According to the New Mexico State Police, officers attempted to pull Rubio over on Marland Street, but he initially did not stop. After pulling over, Rubio exited his vehicle despite officers’ orders to remain inside, placing his right hand behind his back.

Investigators report that Rubio then raised his arms, appearing to point a weapon at the officers, prompting them to fire at least one round, striking him.

Rubio was transported to the hospital, where he later died. No firearm was found at the scene, and the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.

The determination of whether the officers’ actions were justified will be made by the district attorney’s office.
